TWO DAY NATIONAL SEMINAR
on Changing Role of DIETs in Kerala : Challenges and Prospects
DIET Thrissur, Kerala on 01.03.2014 and 02.03.2014
As part of the Silver Jubilee celebrations of DIETs in Kerala, DIET Thrissur organized a two day national seminar, ‘DREAMS 2014’ (DIETs' Role in Emerging Academic Management System) on the theme Changing Role of DIETs in Kerala: Challenges and Prospects on 1st and 2nd March 2014 at DIET Thrissur.
Principal Sri. C Babu welcomed the dignitaries and delegates at the inaugural session. Sri. P. K. Abdu Rab, Hon. Minister for education, Govt. of Kerala naugurated the seminar. In the inaugural speech, he stressed the importance of collaboration of various agencies and the training to ensure quality of education. Adv. Therambil Ramakrishnan MLA presided over the function. District Panchayath President Sri. C.C. Sreekumar inaugurated the exhibition. Dr. C. Usman standing committee chairman, Thrissur Corporation released the book ‘Sakshyam'.
Quality Initiatives In School Education; Scope And Role Of DIETs.
The first session was a paper presentation by A.Shajahan IAS Special Secretary to General Education on: ‘Quality initiatives in school education; Scope and role of DIETs.’ He opined that the DIETs present role in Education scenario have to be considered in the context of RTE and challenges of school education in 21st century.
Revamping teacher education as a quality initiative in Kerala context.
The third session was lead by Dr. Padma M.Sarangapani, Associate Professor And Head of the Department of HRD, Institute for Social and Economic Changes, Bangalore. Dr.P.K Jayaraj, Director, SIE Kerala presided over the session.
In her unique style Dr.Padma handled the topic on: “Revamping teacher education as a quality initiative in Kerala context.” She stressed the importance of the DIETs as the fundamental institution, as the district level to strengthen and revitalize teacher education.
Changing role of DIETs: Perspectives and Programmes
Next session was a group discussion from that “The way forward” is evolved which is a clear indication of the dedication and spirit of DIET family in ensuring quality education. SIE ,SSA and IT @School provided ample support.
The way forward’
In the evening session an in-house get together had been conducted where a detailed discussion on the past, present and future of DIETs especially in Kerala was done. From this discussion, a document on the future programmes of DIETs - The way forward was evolved.
DIETs and the qualitative research in education planning and policy
The second day sessions started with the presentation of Smt. Aruna Ratnam, Education specialist at UNICEF Chennai on the topic: ‘DIETs and the qualitative research in education planning and policy'. She shared her views on qualitative research. It should aim an excellent child development. For quality we have universal parameters, But excellence is path less.We conduct excellent studies. But there is no proper documentation and follow up. Dr. E. Sreekala, Prof., University of Pondichery presented a paper on dropouts.
Dr. Amarjith Singh IAS, Adl. Secretary, MHRD, New Delhi was the chief guest of the Valedictory function. In his keynote address he pointed the role of DIETs as the nerve centers of educational system at the district level. DIET should be continuously alert its dynamic process and will have to make sure that the curriculum and the teaching learning material are revised, updated and refined on the ongoing basis, keeping in the views of the needs of the community and the best practices in those are
